5 Design Tips for an Effective Website

After creating countless websites for a wide variety of organizations, I've found the most effective designs have 5 similar qualities:

  1. Less is more. When constructing the page layout for a website, choose to do less - it truly makes all the difference. Opt for a more minimalist approach to avoid a cluttered look.
  2. You only have 10 seconds - use it! On average, it takes a user approximately 10 seconds to decide whether or not your homepage is interesting or not. Use those 10 seconds effectively by grabbing their attention with interesting photos, colors, video and graphics.
  3. Choose most interesting over most importantLets face it: most people want to be entertained, even if it’s just for a few seconds. So in those few seconds you have their attention, make sure you have something interesting to show.
  4. Video and imagery speak louder than words. We’ve all heard the saying, “a pictures is worth a thousand words.” Well, it’s absolutely true. Captivating pictures and video can really do a lot for your website. By capturing the user’s attention, your website is much more likely to generate business, which ultimately is the goal, right?
  5. Above all, keep it simple. To go back to my first point, we live in a world suffering from information overload. Simplicity is refreshing and effective, I just can't stress it enough.
